About Special Testing Accommodations (STA)
For applicants who may have difficulty taking the test due to illness, injury, physical disability, or other conditions, we offer Special Testing Accommodations (STA). If you wish to apply for STA in an overseas test site, please read the following instructions carefully before submitting your application. For applicants who require STA within Japan, please refer to the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES) website.
Type of STA
1. Special-format question booklets (Braille and enlarged print question booklets)
2. Alternative answering methods (Braille and writing answers directly on the question booklet)
3. Extended testing time
4. Testing in a separate room
5. Use of necessary equipment (magnifying glass, hearing aids, headphones, etc.)
6. Other accommodations that the Japan Foundation deems appropriate
The use of smartphones, smartwatches, and all electronic devices with camera or communication functions is prohibited. Therefore, examinees who need to use electronic devices such as smartphones or earphones (e.g., a smartphone for Continuous Glucose Monitoring in the case of diabetes, electronic magnifiers with communication functions, hearing aids, etc.) must apply for STA for their use.
Overview of applying for STA
If you wish to apply for STA, please contact your local host institution for a “Request Form for Special Testing Accommodations.” After completing the form, please submit it along with your JLPT application form and a medical certificate (or other required documents) by the deadline set by the local host institution.
Process for Reviewing and Finalizing STA
1. The content of the STA will be reviewed and finalized in consultation with specialists, based on the documents submitted by the applicant.
2. If the submitted STA application materials are insufficient, additional information may be requested.
3. The decision will be communicated to the applicant or their representative through a “Notice of Special Testing Accommodations.” Please note that some requested accommodations may not be granted.
4. Applicants must review the decision and bring the “Notice of Special Testing Accommodations” together with the test voucher on the test day.
