Changes in number of applicants (1984-2024)
※ 2009 was the first year the test was conducted twice a year and also the last year of the old JLPT. Exceptionally many examinees took the test that year.
※ In 2017, the number of applicants exceeded 1 million, and in 2018, the number of examinees exceeded 1 million in the world.
※ In 2020, due to the spread of the COVID-19, the JLPT in July was canceled all over the world, so it was only held in December.
※The number of applicants drastically decreased from 2020 to 2022 due to the COVID-19, but in 2024, there were approximately 1.72 million applicants worldwide, the largest number ever recorded.

Reasons for taking the test
The JLPT is taken for various reasons, including admission to advanced education, finding employment and testing one's own abilities.
