Changes in number of applicants (1984-2023)
※ 2009 was the first year the test was conducted twice a year and also the last year of the old JLPT. Exceptionally many examinees took the test that year.
※ In 2017, the number of applicants exceeded 1 million, and in 2018, the number of examinees exceeded 1 million in the world.
※ In 2020, due to the spread of the COVID-19, the JLPT in July was canceled all over the world, so it was only held in December.
※ In 2023, when restrictions due to the COVID-19 were eased, a record approximately 1.48 million applications were received, and the number of overseas applicants exceeded 1 million for the first time.

Reasons for taking the test
